1. A little about myself.
I grew up in Sea Point and although I lived abroad in my teen and early adult years, Cape Town has always been home. Having a son who lives in China working as a Video Journalist, has given me the opportunity to travel and is one of the many countries I have visited over the years, due to my passion for travelling.
2. Why did you want to become a teacher?
I’ve worked in the educational field for many years, not only as an English teacher, but spent many years teaching art to children. I decided to change my ‘teaching’ career after my son finished High school to teaching English as a foreign language which, has given me the daily privilege of meeting students from all over the world, learning about their cultures, food, music and way of life.
3. What would you say to people who underestimate Cape Town as an English language study destination?
There is no ‘underestimating’ when it comes to studying in Cape Town. We have the best weather, delicious food and wine, the most beautiful beaches and mountains, wild-life safaris, friendly and laidback people. Cape Town is a melting pot of cultures and has something to offer to everyone. Cape Studies offers English courses in a relaxed atmosphere with great teachers who all have a passion for teaching.
4. What advice would you give to a student to maintain their level of English when returning to their home country?
Keep practicing English through movies, music, reading, talking and finding friends who speak English, and why not organise a once a month dinner evening to speak English only? It could make for a fun and memorable evening.
5. How do activities organised by Cape Studies, both at school and outside, influence on the learning process?
Inside school activities such as braais (barbecues) are a wonderful way for the students and teachers to interact and get to know each other, at the same time practicing English. Outside activities, which are many, are the best way for students to not only practice English but to learn new cultures, try different food, jump off bridges, paraglide off the mountain, skydive, wine tasting and of course, dancing in the many clubs in the famous Long Street. Any activity has a positive influence on the learning process, both culturally and in the learning process.
1. Tell us a little about you.
I grew up in Jeffreys Bay, a well-known surfing town in the Eastern Cape. I studied a Bachelor of Science at the University of Stellenbosch and in 2011 moved to Tanzania. It is there that I discovered my passion for teaching and decided to do a CELTA. I taught at the British Council for many years and upon my return from Tanzania, I decided to move to Cape Town. I first started teaching at Cape Studies on a part-time basis and then became permanent when I was offered the position of Head Teacher.
2. What do you most enjoy about Cape Studies?
Meeting people from all over the world and the positive work environment. The staff is friendly and we all work together as a team. The students also enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and feel at home, making their learning experience a successful one.
3. What English courses do you teach at the school?
I teach all levels and courses offered by the school. My favourite though are exam preparation courses, where I can get to work alongside the student/s to help them achieve their goals for their future studies.
4. What ESL courses does Cape Studies offer?
We offer General and Intensive courses for all levels, exam preparations for universities entrance like TOEFL, IELTS, FCE, CAE, CPE and PTE, Business classes and private tuition.
5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an ESL teacher?
If you are passionate about teaching, it really is a very rewarding profession. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Most schools pride themselves on being ‘the fanciest’ or ‘the largest’. But we pride ourselves on our teachers, as it is they who make a lesson successful, which subsequently leads to the achievement of the language school. We believe that a good teacher is essential for a language course to be a success. A compelling teacher will make sure the course is not just good but excellent. We are honoured to be working with such astounding teachers.
Cape Studies opened our doors in 1995 making us one of the founding members of the language schools in South Africa. Our consistency in high quality training sets the standard for all other schools in Cape Town. The school is situated in Green Point, one of the trendiest upmarket areas of Cape Town. With attractions like the city center, the world famous V&A Waterfront and scenic beaches all within walking distance, Cape Studies is perfect for students and tourists hoping to do a bit of sightseeing outside of school hours. The school building is a beautiful villa with classrooms opening up onto a garden courtyard and pool area. A maximum of 8 per class gives students that personalised feeling. Classrooms are fitted with interactive electronic white boards and the school has 24 hour Wi-Fi. Students even have the choice of living on the premises as our residence is just upstairs.
